Blog post.

I started this unusual parenting journey 21 years ago with the birth of my first child, Ruby, and my son joined our lives seven years later. When your child lines up their toys and prefers to look at manhole covers in a park instead of beautiful Eastern Grey Problems, you quickly realize as a parent that there is an issue. We are facing epidemic proportions of children being diagnosed with ASD, and the causes are still unknown. Yes, there are opinions, but that doesn't help when you hear the heartbreaking news as a mother that your children have Autism.

For me, I did what any normal mother would do—I went home and had a cry in the bathroom away from the children. Then, I shifted into FIGHT mode, like one of those incredible World War II cartoon women used to encourage women to work at home to support the war effort. I spent months researching the diagnosis and completed an autism awareness course online at a Melbourne university to prepare for the many challenges I would face as a parent. My husband has been supportive of the children, but it took time to adjust to the new "Normal"—making sure my child's day is planned, watching for sensory issues when taking them out, and choosing the right therapies such as psychology and occupational therapy to help reduce the overstimulus effect of meltdowns when out in public.

I quickly learned that I was judged harshly by other parents if my child had a sensory meltdown in a shopping aisle, believing it was bad behavior and a lack of discipline. I have faced harsh criticism from family, friends, strangers—you name it. My poor self-esteem and morale have been badly damaged to the point where my own identity was lost, and I was a hollow shell of my former self. It wasn't until I embraced my Faith as a Christian and had a chance meeting with an amazing American pastor who told me these wonderful words I needed to hear: "God gave you and your husband these children with Autism because he knew you could handle it." That was it—like a sprinkle of fairy dust—I embarked on this monumental journey of fighting back through the power of the written word.

Balancing time as a parent of special needs children is tough—sleep often takes a backseat, and finding time to write can feel impossible. My life was a whirlwind; both my husband and I took on full-time disability caregiving, living on just a few hours of sleep. We moved to a small country town seeking a fresh start, but unfortunately, I faced judgment from local churches that spread rumors about my family’s needs. That was deeply painful, yet I felt God guiding me, showing me I was like a pioneer exploring new grounds. I realized I could become a Christian Autism Advocate by sharing openly through my parenting book, The Crazy Mother's Guide To Raising Exceptional Children. As my children grew into teenagers, God gently made more time available for me and encouraged me to honestly share what life is really like behind closed doors.

The nights on suicide watch for an out-of-control teenager, the numerous medical appointments, family criticism, and the lack of social support in the local community. I became imprisoned in my own box and alone, judged by other Christian women. Writing our family's life story was liberating, and it has now allowed me to focus on my passion for writing fiction for children and teenagers. I have all the educational training—a degree in Communications and Literature, training as a radio journalist, and experience as a high school teacher. I just needed to have faith in God and myself as a writer to follow through and create large print work for ASD individuals and others who may have dyslexia or ADHD, and need books with large print, smaller paragraphs, plenty of white space, and illustrations to help process the information and actually finish the book.

My wonderful children have achieved many remarkable things, and now I want to give back by sharing my heartfelt, faith-inspired stories to support other families. I write because I truly love it. After many years caring for my children's medical needs, I have finally regained my sense of purpose. While my faith, husband, and children remain my top priorities, writing is a small luxury that helps me process my experiences and hopefully inspire other parents of children with special needs. It’s important to recognize what happens behind closed doors. Everyone wants to be noticed, but what these parents need most is compassion and understanding, especially in public during their child's sensory meltdown. No criticism—just kind words like "You've got this," or "Can I help in any way?'—can make a significant difference during times of high stress.

If you would like to support my Advocacy, please purchase my work, review it, and subscribe. Or simply share my posts on social media. Links to my social media pages are under the Header.

God Bless,

Sonia D.

Update post.

It is tough to be an Aussie indie author with limited funds to build a career in this industry. I have a family with special needs, and my husband and I gave up our careers five years ago to care for our children, who required full-time attention, school, and therapies. I always dreamed of being a YA writer, but now my dreams have shifted, and I write exclusively for families with children and teens who have disabilities. I understand what it’s like as a mother to see your amazing child come home covered in bruises from other kids because he is different. I

know what it’s like to see families create rumors about your children and spread them through a local community network. I understand what it’s like to have your children never invited to birthday parties. But most importantly, I realized a few years ago that I can't make this about myself and my family’s struggles, or else I wouldn’t be able to do anything to help. So, as a mom, I decided to fight back through the power of the written word.

My self-esteem was low, but God placed it on my heart to focus on others instead of myself. In one year, I wrote six books, each different in genre and style, to promote disability advocacy, especially regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder and Dissociative Identity Disorder. I am not materialistic and care more about making sure my work reaches the families who need it most than about book sales. Having beautiful emails from others in the literary industry supporting my cause is incredibly humbling. So, a big thank you to the book reviewers who took the time to read my stories. (I am so impressed because I can't even get my teens to read my work)

To read more reviews, please check out my Goodreads link.

God Bless,

Sincerely yours,

Sonia D.

I just received the most beautiful book review, which made me cry. It means that all the long nights and sleep deprivation to create a beautiful story were worth it. All the juggling

as a special needs parent was worth it. But most importantly, it means God has everything to do with this, and I will be eternally grateful!

I feel very blessed,

Sonia D.

(Spotify soundtrack link for Book 2: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7uT49UtREEm7xvoqDKfbi3

https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B0DTJCFM3P

Update post.

1. The inspiration behind the Haven Cove series is Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. It's a fascinating disorder due to how different the personalities are. However, there is a dark side, as individuals face a lot of emotional pain and anguish, physical side effects, and negative stigma, with the media often portraying a DID individual as a serial killer. This is far from the truth, as DID individuals lead normal lives—going to work, driving, and having families. They deserve recognition as truly talented and gifted people.

2. Josie's name was a tribute to the main female character in Never Been Kissed, played beautifully by Drew Barrymore. Blaine's name was inspired by Pretty in Pink, where Blaine is Andy's love interest. This is my favorite movie of all time, and I remember seeing it at the cinema when I was just thirteen.

3. The Haven Cove Series is my homage to 80s Choose Your Own Adventure books and promotes immersive reading. Instead of using text, it uses music. Growing up in the 80s and being an avid fan of alternative 80s music, I've woven songs into the main plot, with a Spotify playlist link included. As an author, when you encounter a song, please listen to it on Spotify and consider why I chose it and how it relates to the story.

4. I listened to over 60 hours of 80s alternative music, deliberately selecting each song for its scene.

5. The central theme of this series is: "What is real?" This series is built around gifted writers and how words can change your destiny. Writers are the heroes, with a superpower to turn a dead author's unfinished manuscript into reality—releasing it into a parallel universe where all characters become real and are unaware they were once figments of a writer's imagination. They live out their days living the writer's story!

Update post.

The Ink Returns! has finally been released, and it hasn't been easy. A long, hot summer in Australia, hailstorms at night, and an office filled with rescue animals vying for my attention, with my keyboard often considered a comfy seat. Looking back on the beginning of The Haven Cove Series, I feel truly blessed to have created a clean, fictional supernatural world set in the 80s, centered on the music of that era. With a "Stranger Things" vibe meets "Pretty in Pink", I wanted to share my love of '80s music as a former '90s Goth.

Music is powerful; it touches your soul and instantly brings back memories of youth. My passion for writing is a way to combat the extreme bullying my ASD kids—and I—faced years ago. I've always danced to my own tune, and I’m proud of who my children have become as teenagers. Now, I finally have the time to write. If you're wondering why I don't have hundreds of reviews like other authors, it's because I refuse to pay reader groups to review my work. I believe money shouldn't be exchanged for reviews, so I let my online presence grow organically.

I have dozens of reader groups and marketers wanting to work with me and promote my work, contacting me weekly. As a trained journalist, I am selective about who I collaborate with and prefer to stay true to my morals rather than focus solely on book sales. To me, as an author, the time I have to write and advocate for ASD and DID awareness is my primary motivation—creating books for those who aren't served by the publishing industry. All my work is in large print, 16 point or larger. I use smaller paragraphs, include illustrations when needed, and leave plenty of white space. Why? Readers with ASD, ADHD, and other reading challenges find this format easier to absorb and finish a book.
Additionally, as a trained high school English teacher with extra training in autism awareness and my own kids on the spectrum, I aim to create stories that resonate with kids and teens who are different and march to their own beat. How can you help? Please promote my work on your social media, and if you loved my stories, please review them on Goodreads or Amazon. It helps my books show up in search results.

What can you expect in Book 2? Well, another fantastic 80s soundtrack—I've spent around 80 hours listening to 80s music while writing, making sure each song fits the scene. A Spotify song list has been created to make it easier for readers to find the music, and the link is in both the paperback and e-pub versions. This is new, and I'm currently updating the first book to include the Spotify list for Sincerely Yours. The story reaches a pivotal moment as Josie and Blaine attend the Whitlock Writer's Retreat. An invitation was left on top of her purse at Prom in the first book. Josie and Blaine have moved to Los Angeles, as his father is terminal with lung cancer. Both are in college—Josie studying journalism and Blaine attending a prestigious art school—and they’re adjusting to their new lives. Alaric has recruited a new Realm of Darkness writer and is determined to become real. With another high-impact cliffhanger at the end, you'll want tissues and some time to process this incredible sequel. The untitled Book 3 will be released in mid-July 2026 and will wrap up the story.
However, the Haven Cove Universe will continue with a new series that focuses on three new characters introduced in this book. Let's see which characters you think deserve their own stories.
Thank you for purchasing The Ink Returns! I look forward to hearing your honest feedback.
God Bless,
Sincerely yours,
Sonia D. Hebdon

Hebdon?

I am an Aussie, Christian, indie, nonprofit author who prices her books only to cover production costs. My husband and I are a writing team; he is a trained editor, video, and audio editor. I hold a degree in Creative Writing and Communication Studies, with a focus on crafting stories, designing covers, and managing all aspects of promotion. I am also a trained secondary teacher in special needs education. Because of my home life, I am a Disability Advocate for children and teens with disabilities, as I have three autistic teens, and my eldest child also has Dissociative Identity Disorder. After watching my children being bullied, I decided to fight back with the power of written words.

I write exclusively for children and teens with disabilities, and all my work reflects this focus. My books are in large print, featuring smaller paragraphs, ample white space, and illustrations when needed. Individuals with ASD, ADHD, and Dyslexia find it easier to read books in this format. Please support my work by sharing my posts on social media, so that necessary changes can be made in the literary industry to include individuals with disabilities in stories as well as in book layout.

https://x.com/HebdonD53953

https://www.instagram.com/?hl=en

https://www.tiktok.com/@soniad.hebdon1

https://www.goodreads.com/author/dashboard?ref=nav_profile_authordash

It has been a long, hot summer in Australia, and the sequel to Sincerely Yours is finally finished and currently being edited. Many hours spent writing Blaine and Josie's new adventure in Los Angeles were completed at my writing desk, which was kept company by my rescue cats. There were numerous typos and deleted texts, thanks to my fur babies stepping on my keyboard to get my attention. But with a little determination and plenty of cat treats, I managed to finish the sequel with a heart-stopping ending that ties into the launch of the last book in July 2026.

Suppose you haven't read the first book. In that case, there is plenty of time to catch up on the original storyline before the characters are relocated to Los Angeles to face the Whitlock Society head-on and, of course, our favorite Nemesis, Alaric, who has recruited a new horror writer to finish his story and make him real. A new mixtape has been carefully selected to accompany the book. My husband has been testing the songs written into the storyline, and he is an ultimate ‘80s music guru and talented alternative Christian musician. He has given his thumbs up for the unusual songs that were chosen. There were quite a few he hadn't even heard of, which made me feel smarter than him for a change.

We are a husband-and-wife team, as he is a trained editor and multimedia specialist, and I am trained in Journalism, PR, and, of course, Creative Writing. We are a family dedicated to catering to special needs families by choosing stories that ASD kids can relate to. All our work is presented in large print, with smaller paragraphs, ample white space, and illustrations when necessary. As a trained special education teacher, I realized that these simple changes in the way a book is set out actually help kids with ASD and ADHD process the information more effectively and complete a book. As a parent, this is a win-win!

If you are curious about our real-life Addams Family, please check out my autobiography, The Crazy Mother's Guide To Raising Exceptional Children, which is a survival guide for parents of special needs children who have days when they want to run away and join the Circus. Warning! You must have a good sense of humor to read this guide, and yes, all the hilarious stories mentioned in this guide are true. As for The Haven Cove Series, The Ink Returns is guaranteed to have you transported once again back to the 90s without the need for a DeLorean.

Further updates soon,

God Bless,

Sonia D.

As a Christian Aussie Writer and most importantly as a mother to three Autistic teens, I have seen the worst in adult behaviour directed at my children. I have witnessed grown adults in their thirties and forties make fun of my children's disabilities. These parents teach this behavior to their own children, and the cycle repeats.

I'm not interested in how many books I sell. I'm not a materialistic individual, and God has provided our family with what we need. What I am interested in is promoting autism awareness through my work. I know what it is like as a Mom of special needs children and how arduous the parenting journey is. I know of the heartache, the tears, holding your child as they cry because they are called 'retarded' for being autistic.

I have sat on the shower floor in tears, away from my children, releasing a build-up of emotion. I have seen my children not invited to kids' parties and made to be seen as inhuman, yes, by adults.

This is why I write exclusively for families of children with disabilities, particularly Autism and DID. I want to be the voice of these parents who are 'Heroes' behind closed doors and sacrifice everything to help their children learn the life skills they need to have an everyday life.

I am experienced in public speaking as I trained as a radio journalist, and I want to be heard. This isn't about simply writing stories; my work is about changing attitudes when it comes to the term disability. How can you help?

Share my posts, and if you can afford to buy more work, then please purchase and review. Are you a social media influencer or a book blogger? Please reach out to me to talk about my mission for your program. What a lot of people don't realise is that suicide rates are high in ASD teens because of bullying.

I nearly lost my eldest to suicide years ago, and this is why I'm using my words as a sword to shine a light on the world of special needs families. There seems to be a lack of kindness by Adults who seem to feel good about themselves, ridiculing special needs children and their families.

I have met many amazing authors during my writing journey, and I understand writing is their bread and butter. For me, my writing will always be about giving a voice to a community who are often in the shadows.

In the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) utters the line, "So shines a good deed in a weary world," in reference to the Everlasting Gobstopper. Ever since I was a little girl, this beautiful line has stayed with me and motivates my author's journey as an adult.

Be a light in the darkness of your community, spread my message, and become a part of The Crazy Mother's Movement, who want change in people's perspectives of special needs children.

God Bless,

Sonia D.

Blog post.

Recently, I have witnessed the treatment of autistic children by adults in a disgusting way. I can't go into the details, but my children were targets. I am a nonprofit author dedicated to improving the lives of families with special needs children and creating autism awareness. It isn't okay for a child to be treated terribly by an adult for no reason because of their disability. You can't reason with people like this; all I can do is write how I feel as a writer representing parents with kids who have special needs. To adults who think it is okay to ridicule kids with disabilities verbally, you don't have a clue what it's truly like to have a child with special needs. The sleepless nights, the depression, the meltdowns, the numerous medical appointments, the emotional stress that you, as a parent, carry in your heart as you fight to help your child navigate this cruel world. Second, parents of children with special needs are heroes. Yes, that's right, heroes. If you ask their children, you'll see how hard they fight for them. When confronting parents who have bullied their child with special needs, their first reaction is denial and blaming your own child for the bullying incident, even if you have proof. So, what are you as a mom who has seen your child being treated terribly by other kids? You fight! Not physically—indeed, you should stand up to the parent and try to stay calm as you discuss the issue. But, for me, nine times out of ten, it doesn't work.

So, what's next? You find a network of moms who understand what you're going through. You share stories, laugh, cry, but most of all, you connect to the global community where you know you're understood through online special needs groups. Third, please read my work. If finances are an issue, which they are for me, message me, and I would be happy to share FREE e-copies with other parents of kids with special needs. I am a mother who is a practicing Christian and takes her faith seriously. I'm not writing for money, fame, or book sales—NO! I create my work to show kids with ASD that they are unique, special, and possess their own amazing gifts, whether it's art, music, or being good at mathematics. The reason I started writing in the first place was to highlight the need for a change in how adults view and behave toward kids with disabilities. Their behaviour is seen by their own children, who think it is okay to do the same. I started a private group for moms of children with special needs to be able to discuss their experiences openly and gain emotional support.

Please join my group, designed for parents of special needs children and not book marketers. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1803505657124738

The aim of this group is for parents of kids with disabilities to know they are doing a fantastic job and to get emotional support from me and other Moms. I don't like the term author. I am a Christian mom who wants to promote Autism awareness through my work and, most importantly, share my Faith and how God has helped my family. How can you help? Share my work and my posts on your own social media network. My favourite quote from The Crazy Mother's Guide To Raising Exceptional Children is this!

"Let's face it: mums must be as resourceful and adaptable as Swiss Army knives: multiple tools in one! We must wear many hats in the family home: chef, nurse, therapist, cleaner, grocery shopper, partner, and attentive mother to our children. There is even an expectation for modern mothers to work a job or financially contribute to the family in some way. It is exhausting, and that is where my faith in Jesus Christ comes into play. I am not ashamed to talk about my faith; it is why I am still alive. "

Hebdon, Sonia. The Crazy Mother’s Guide to Raising Exceptional Children. 2025, p. 45.

"

It's exciting to see this book, born from my love of 80s music, slowly reaching the world and becoming available in online stores. This book holds a special place in my heart because I included a Mix Tape list, allowing readers to listen to bands like The Cure, New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Joy Division, Thompson Twins, and more as they read the story. Using music for "immersive reading" adds another layer, along with new songs I've written, including Blaine's love song to Josie, called "Sincerely Yours," which is available on my social media accounts. All my work is in large print and includes shorter paragraphs with more white space on the page. Why? As a mom to three kids with ASD, it actually helps the reader absorb the information more easily. When you purchase a copy of Sincerely Yours, you are supporting a non-profit author who keeps her costs low to cover writing expenses and not wages. I'm interested in spreading Autism awareness, as you can see from my unique work for other age groups, including a Survival Parenting guide called The Crazy Mother's Guide to Raising Exceptional Children.

Sincerely Yours...Written In The Stars And Inked In Destiny! is not just a story, but a nostalgic experience. So, pick up a copy today, turn the stereo up loud, and travel back to the 80s, where the colors were bright and music touched your soul.

“Sincerely Yours is a stunning and soul-baring collection that whispers truth, grief, and resilience. Sonia D. Hebdon has a gift for saying what others only dare to feel. Her work is a hug for the broken and a mirror for anyone trying to make peace with life’s ache. Read it. Let it hold you.”

–D.E. Sherman, Bestselling Fantasy Author

As a survivor of crippling depression and a mother to two extraordinary children with autism — one of whom also faces Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) — I write from a place of deep understanding and resilience. My latest novel, set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1980s, tells the heartfelt story of two teenagers who defy convention, bond over life's struggles, and discover the power of their own unique voices. Meet Josie Worthington: a gifted writer and an undeniable outsider. The loss of her father by a sudden heart attack at age three has made Josie grow up feeling disconnected from the world around her. Her sanctuary lies in the music of The Cure, Joy Division, and Psychedelic Furs, and in expressing her individuality through eclectic fashion. Her world shifts when she meets Blaine Cordwell — son of a legendary rock star — who has also felt the sting of being different. After fleeing the tabloids and relocating to the sleepy town of Haven Cove, Blaine finds solace in the raw energy of The Clash and Ramones.

Neighbors, friends, and eventually lovers, Josie and Blaine navigate the heavy themes of parental loss, broken relationships, and the struggle to stand out in a world that favors conformity. Inspired by my own love story — meeting my husband at 23 during University— Blaine’s character embodies the originality and authenticity I cherish in him. The core message of Sincerely Yours is about having faith in yourself and trusting that a guiding force is always present. My personal journey with my daughter’s alters and the questions I’ve faced about their reality fueled the story’s foundation: writers who can create real worlds for their characters through the use of an antique typewriter. In their universe, these characters are unaware that they are merely stories crafted by a writer’s hand.

But dark forces threaten this fragile balance. The Realm of Dark Delights, a shadowy realm opposing their world, seeks to manipulate and destroy—a threat that could devastate both their universe and ours. Book One of The Haven Cove Series introduces Josie and Blaine as they confront a Stranger Things-inspired universe, racing against time to free Eleanor, a former writer whose soul is trapped within a typewriter. Due to launch on July 4th, Sincerely Yours is a rollercoaster of suspense, woven with authentic 80s music and powered by new, specially written songs inspired by the era. To celebrate this release, I collaborated with New Wave Multimedia to create exclusive tracks that bring Josie and Blaine’s world to life. Check out my YouTube channel for these nostalgic, genre-defining tunes and step into a universe where love, magic, and music collide.
Sincerely Yours... Clean Fiction and examines issues of Faith!

https://www.youtube.com/@SoniaD.52

https://www.amazon.com/Sincerely-Yours-Written-stars-Destiny-ebook/dp/B0FDWQSZLJ

The Concept of Reality: What Is Real? Disability and Reality–Explored in "Sincerely Yours"!

Blog post.

As a parent of children with Autism, I have come to understand that the concept of reality is both complex and deeply personal. My motivation in writing my first book, “The Crazy Mother’s Guide To Raising Exceptional Children,” was born from a desire to offer hope and guidance. It’s a heartfelt commitment to sharing faith and innovative, practical parenting strategies to navigate life’s most intense moments with resilience and love.

Many children with disabilities experience dissociation and feel disconnected from reality. They might zone out and retreat into their own little world. Sounds familiar? Many autistic kids have a safe space where they can, for a moment, switch off and mentally go elsewhere. Everyone daydreams. For example, you might be driving to the supermarket and suddenly realize you don’t remember how you got there.

It is important to engage your child in activities that stimulate the left side of the brain, which involves practical skills. In contrast, the right side of the brain is more artistic and associated with daydreaming or psychosis. Start early by doing jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and especially Lego, which is excellent for fine hand-eye coordination. Learning a musical instrument also helps with this. My son has improved his concentration and ability to stay present by building impressive Star Wars Lego sets. The lesson I’ve learned is to encourage your children’s ability to stay present and avoid dissociation by engaging in activities that stimulate the left brain.

Let’s explore how the idea of ‘reality’ is addressed in “Sincerely Yours…Written In The Stars And Inked In Destiny.” Blaine Cordwell is the son of a well-known lead singer from a 1980s hard rock band. His father has fallen into a trap of drugs and alcohol. While his father tours, Blaine remains behind with his mother. Blaine feels invisible to his father, like a child who is seen but not heard. He feels unnoticed and as if he is not a real person. However, meeting 17-year-old bookworm and alternative music fan Josie Worthington changes everything for him, as he is finally seen for who he truly is inside, rather than just a rockstar’s son. To clarify, as a Christian mother and writer, this book is clean fiction, so nothing is explored in depth—just basic background knowledge.

Sincerely Yours is a heartwarming teen romance, similar to the books I read as a teenager, such as the Sweet Valley High series by Francine Pascal. It's a young adult series that explores the lives of identical twins, Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, who live in the fictional town of Sweet Valley. I have fond memories of reading these books with my childhood friends, sitting on a bed in North Qld, and being enthralled by the lives of these two fictional characters.

I want to revive this clean teen romance soap opera genre, which reassures parents that these books are faith-based and free of inappropriate language and scenes. The art of writing is to craft a literary work that explores topics teens still face today, such as lack of identity, not fitting in, pushing boundaries, and bullying, while incorporating supernatural storylines that appeal to teens now.

The author's ability to create new worlds is explored in this novel. As Blaine and Josie face a Nancy Drew-style mystery—a mystery that has caused writers to disappear in Haven Cove since 1968—the story unfolds. The novel also explores first love, as Blaine and Josie experience their first taste of genuine, innocent teen love. This is part of a series of three books, and the fates of my two favorite teens are still undecided. However, I can reassure parents that this series will resonate with your teen’s personal life and gently highlight the power of faith to overcome life's obstacles.

Sincerely Yours,

Sonia D. Hebdon
